Assisted Living

What is Assisted Living

The Assisted Living Federation of America defines an Assisted Living residence as “a special combination of housing, supportive services, personalized assistance and healthcare designed to respond to the individual needs of those that need help with the activities of daily living and wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Supportive services are available 24 hours per day and are provided in a way that promotes maximum dignity and independence.” Assisted living facilities provide more health-related services than retirement or senior housing but less than 24 hour nursing care provided in a skilled nursing facility. Most residents in assisted living communities pay for their own care as Government payments for assisted living is currently limited. The goal is to provide services in a less expensive, more residential atmosphere, while allowing individuals to age in place and hopefully avoid premature placement in a skilled nursing facility. Assisted living is currently the fastest growing housing alternative for elderly individuals.
